How to Install Metal Roofing
We all want a good roof under our heads. A house that is sturdy without a leaking roof is what most of us desire to live in for a long time. It is, therefore, worth investing in a durable roofing material.
A metal roof is worth considering for your home. This material can stand bad weather conditions, is waterproof and has a high fire safety rating. Using this type of roof, any homeowner can be sure to provide his or her family with a comfortable place to live in.
Installing metal roofing can be quite expensive but this should not really matter if you want to have a durable top covering for your house. There are different types you can choose from but you can pick the shingle if you want to achieve the tile look or wood roof system. With the shingle, various colors and designs are also available.
The metal material for roofing purposes is still fairly new so you might want to get the services of a licensed contractor to install your new roof. Do ensure, though, that the professional you’re hiring has the proper documents to confirm that he’s indeed qualified and knowledgeable about the installation process.
Basically, there are two types of metal roofing commonly used today. The R-panel has high ridges and use 5/16 lap screws for installation. The other one is the V-crimp roofing considered to be the simplest type to install as it does not require lap screws.
The first step to this process is to measure the height and length of your roof. Add a few inches more from two to four for the overhang. You can then order your metal sheets from any local roofing supply store.
From there, you can now remove the old roofing or shingles using a pitchfork. Once all have been taken off, you should then lay roofing felt to serve as a base for the new roof. Another option is to use the slat board made from pine wood. This can be installed over the old roofing using screws at every two feet lengthwise.
From there, install the metal sheet and screw it. The distance of the screws should at least be two feet in the center and inside edge of the sheet.
When putting the second sheet, it should overlap the first one. For the V-crimp type, usually one crimp overlaps in the edge of the first sheet. For the R-panel, one lip will overlap the last ridge of the first sheet.
Repeat the steps for the other metal sheets until you get to the last part. When there’s extra space that goes past the roof edge, this needs to be cut using the tin snips.
The metal edging should then be installed using roofing nails that are 1 ¼ inches in size. The screws have to be installed every two feet. This should run all around the roof’s perimeter to cover the sides of the roof and the ridge or the top peak as well.
Other components you need for your roofing system include the flashing, counterflashing and hand tools. The starter flashing’s purpose is to prevent leakage.
