How to Install Solar Panels

Wouldn’t it be great if all people around the world take action in helping preserve the environment? One of the best ways we can contribute to this cause is by using renewable energy and this should start in our homes. The use of solar panels is ideal especially for homes situated in areas which enjoy much sunlight.

Solar panels made of photovoltaic cells are the latest tools installed in homes and buildings today. These help in collecting heat for the use in the interior space whether for heating or running appliances. Although this may involve a high cost, it should not be made as a major issue as the panels are considered long term investment.

Solar panels can be installed either flush mounted on the roof or tilted up. They’re best installed on shingle roofs which are easier to work with as they don’t absorb heat.

Location is very important during the installation process. The solar panels should be positioned in the direction where they can absorb much of the sun’s energy because they can lose their efficiency when situated in a shaded area. The degree of their tilt will depend on the latitude at which they are set up.

The mounts of the panels will have to be secured on the roof and into rafters using stainless steel lag bolts. Ideally, they should be 48 inches apart and positioned directly on top of a rafter. If there’s no rafter, a block of wood placed on the underside of the roof will do.

For the rafter, you need to drill a hole but be sure not to split it. Next step is to fasten the base of the mounts to the roof by using the bolts. Then thread the mount’s post into its base and put roof flashing on each mount to avoid leaks. The mounts need to be aligned in a straight line so use a chalk line for this purpose. Keep in mind to place metal flashing over the mount as well.

After this, the metal rails will have to be fastened to the mounts using the bolts. When the mounts are ready, it’s time to install the solar panels and connect them. They have to be mounted three to six inches above the roof to make them more efficient. Airflow is vital for the photovoltaic cells to work more efficiently.

These solar panels should be kept secure on the mounts and normally, hardware is provided upon purchase. It’s very important to test the panels to ensure that they’re properly secured.

Finally, the wires need to be connected. Each panel has a junction box which contains the positive and negative terminals where the wires will have be connected. The wires should run through the electrical conduit and to the charge controller. Once the connections are made, close the junction boxes and test the solar panels.

Solar panels are available today in various brands with majority of them preassembled already. Using this type will allow for easier and faster installation. With these panels in place, your family can enjoy an eco friendly home for many long years. Less electric bills and more savings going forward.
